SMM8, March 10: it is reported that the two Chilean copper mines (Escondida and Spence), which are owned by BHP Billiton, will pay a total of US $840 million to end ahead of schedule a contract signed with a coal-fired power plant in northern Chile in 2008.
AES Gener, the power company, said the termination date of the agreement between BHP and its Angamos plant had been revised to August 2021, according to a letter filed with the local securities regulator on Friday night. The contract was scheduled to end with the Spence copper mine in 2026 and with the Escondida copper mine in 2029.
Like other Chilean mining companies, BHP has been looking for renewable energy to generate electricity to reduce its carbon footprint.
