In May, about 321000 tons of waste aluminum was recycled in the United States, down 19% from a year earlier.

SMM8, June 4: us secondary producers recycled about 321000 tons of aluminium from scrap in May, down 19 per cent from a year earlier and 6 per cent month-on-month, according to the US Geological Survey yesterday.

According to the tabulation report of the United States Geological Survey, most of the aluminum melted or consumed by secondary producers comes from used cans (37300 tons) and scum and degreasing slag (32500 tons).

According to specific producer types, secondary smelters produced 127000 tons of waste aluminum in May, down from 140000 tons in May 2019, while independent plant manufacturers recovered 98000 metric tons of secondary aluminum, down from 137000 tons in the same period.

Aluminium alloy production at secondary smelters in the US fell 20 per cent to 70900 tonnes in May from 88800 tonnes in the same month last year, according to USGS. 56800 tons of aluminum recovered from scrap are used to produce secondary alloys, compared with 69900 tons in the same period last year.

The average price of scrap aluminum in May was 39.80 cents / lb for second-hand cans (down 30% from the same period last year), 32.35 cents / lb for old plates (down 28%), 33.80 cents / lb (down 21.5%) and 29.25 cents / lb for old cast aluminum. A turn of cents per pound (down 23%).
