SMM7 March 27: Rusal announced today that aluminum production in the second quarter of 2020 totaled 927000 tons (down 1.4 percent from a quarter earlier), with Siberian smelters accounting for 93 percent of total aluminum production.

Aluminium sales in the second quarter of 2020 were 976000 tons (an increase of 6.8 per cent on a quarter-on-quarter basis). Under the influence of COVID-19, the company's sales of value-added products fell to 363000 tons (down 14% on a quarter-on-quarter basis), resulting in a decline in the share of value-added products in the total sales mix to 37% (compared with 46% in the first quarter of 2020).

In the second quarter of 2020, the total output of alumina was 2.009 million tons, which was flat on a quarterly basis. The Russian operation of the company accounts for 35% of the total output of alumina.

Bauxite production rose 8.8 per cent quarter-on-quarter to 3.892 million tons in the second quarter of 2020.

Nepheline production increased by 9.0 per cent quarter-on-quarter to 1.181 million tons.

In the second quarter of 2020, with the support of the new market environment brought by COVID-19 and the company's diversified customer base, the company successfully adjusted the distribution of regional sales. Europe still accounted for the largest share of sales, but its share fell to 46 per cent (down 9 percentage points on a quarter-on-quarter basis), while Asia's share rose to 27 per cent (compared with 15 per cent in the first quarter of 2020). The shift reflects the easing of blockades in Asia and one-off arbitrage opportunities in China.
