China primary aluminium imports in June surged more than 40 times YoY

China’s imports of primary aluminium surged 4060% from a year earlier to 123,500 mt in June, customs data showed on Sunday July 26, as traders stepped up importing on lower prices overseas.

SHANGHAI, Jul 27 (SMM) – China’s imports of primary aluminium surged 4060% from a year earlier to 123,500 mt in June, customs data showed on Sunday July 26, as traders stepped up importing on lower prices overseas.

The imports under HS code 76011010 came in at 86 mt, with imports under HS code 76011090 standing at 123,400 mt.

Total primary aluminium imports in June increased 574% from May. Imports in the first half of the year stood at 162,300 mt, up 390% from the same period a year ago.

Separately, customs data also showed that China’s imports of alumina climbed to the highest level since February 2016, at 422,600 mt in June.

Alumina imports in the first half of the year were 1.91 million mt, up 487.2% year on year.

Exports of alumina in June came in at 32,300 mt, with accumulative exports in the first half of the year at 97,500 mt.
