SMM7 March 3: despite the impact of the epidemic, Chile's national copper industry (Codelco) copper production increased rather than decreased in May. According to the latest figures released by Chile's National Copper Commission, Chile's national copper production rose 3 per cent to 144200 tons in May from a year earlier.
Copper production at BHP's Escondida mine fell 5.6 per cent in May from a year earlier to 93400 tonnes.
Production at the Collahuasi mine in northern Chile, jointly owned by Anglo American and Glencore, surged 40 per cent to 60100 tonnes in May from a year earlier.
Judging from the top 10 copper mines in the world, the output of most mines declined in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, but the overall performance of the mines in Chile was better. With the exception of Los Bronces, copper production in other Chilean mines increased to varying degrees. Copper production in Chilean copper mines such as Escondida, Collahuasi, EI Teniente and Los Pelambres increased by 41 per cent, 16 per cent, 9 per cent and 5 per cent respectively in the first quarter compared with the same period last year. Copper mines in Peru have performed poorly. Copper production in Antamina, Cerro Verde and Las Bambas fell 8 per cent, 24 per cent and 28 per cent respectively from a year earlier.
[SMM] the impact of the epidemic on Chilean copper production has not been shown in the global list of large mine output.
