SMM: Norway's Hydro (Norsk??Hydro) said on Monday that it would cut alumina production at its Alunorte alumina plant in Brazil due to the failure of three transmission towers in the Paragominas bauxite mine.

A spokesman for Hydro said the results of a local police investigation showed that some components of the transmission tower were moved on Saturday, but it was not clear that it was sabotage.

Alumina is screened from bauxite and is mainly used to produce aluminum.

It will take two to three weeks to repair the power supply, during which time the Alunorte alumina plant will operate at a capacity utilization rate of 50 per cent.

The company said it did not expect power supply problems to have a significant impact on customers.

The Paragominas bauxite mine, located in the state of Para in northern Brazil, supplies bauxite to the Alunorte alumina smelter, which in turn supplies alumina to nearby Brazilian aluminum company (Albras) and other global metals companies.
