[SMM Analysis] Lithium hydroxide over Lithium Carbonate Premium range narrows the price of battery-grade Lithium Carbonate closer to Industrial Grade Lithium Carbonate

Published: Jun 21, 2020 22:13

SMM, June 21:

The operating rate of lithium salt is much higher than that of cathode materials, it is still difficult to ship, and the inventory pressure is rising.

As of June 19, the average daily price of SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate was 40750 yuan / ton, down 18.9% since the beginning of the year. The average daily price of industrial-grade lithium carbonate is 34500 yuan / ton, down 12.7% since the beginning of the year. The average daily price of SMM battery-grade lithium hydroxide is 52000 yuan / ton, down 4.6% since the beginning of the year.

In terms of demand, among the four major cathode materials, due to the highest concentration of lithium cobalt oxide suppliers and relatively stable market demand, the operating rate has basically remained high since the beginning of this year; the operating rate of ternary materials and lithium manganate has recovered slowly; and lithium iron phosphate due to the rapid growth of energy storage market demand, superimposed power market cost reduction requirements, the operating rate has been significantly repaired in the second quarter. On the supply side, lithium salt enterprises in order to reduce production costs, increase shipments to withdraw cash and other considerations, the operating rate has been higher than the cathode material enterprises, resulting in an increasing inventory of the industry, shipping is difficult.

SMM Daily Review: Spot lithium carbonate prices continued to drift lower on September 16
Today, SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate spot prices continued to drift lower compared with the previous trading day. The lithium carbonate 2701 contract opened lower at 129,300 yuan/mt today. After the open, bears kept up the pressure, and prices drifted lower along the average price line, hitting an intraday low of 124,000 yuan/mt in the morning session. Around midday, bargain hunting emerged at lower levels, and prices rebounded, briefly rising to around 127,000 yuan/mt in the afternoon before meeting resistance and pulling back again. Near the close, prices moved sideways around 125,800 yuan/mt, with open interest down 1,204 lots. In the spot market, downstream buyers continued to stockpile at lower prices ahead of the September and October holidays. A small number of material producers remained cautious, with spot order purchase intentions below 125,000 yuan/mt. Upstream lithium chemical plants continued to hold spot order prices firm and held back from selling, though some high-priced offers softened slightly. Overall, market inquiries and actual transactions remained active.
