[copper inventory in Shanghai bonded warehouse increased by 1300 tons this week] according to SMM research, copper inventory in Shanghai bonded area increased by 1300 tons to 217500 tons on Friday compared with last week, with inventory growth for the fourth consecutive week, but the increment decreased.

SMM6 March 19: according to SMM research, copper inventory in Shanghai Free Trade Zone increased by 1300 tons to 217500 tons on Friday compared with last week. Inventory increased for the fourth consecutive week, but the increment decreased. Last week, import price difference superimposed domestic trade spot discount decline led to weak import demand, some traders reported the source of goods into the bonded warehouse, so the bonded area inventory further increased. However, due to the tight supply of domestic smelters and the slowdown of the inflow of imported copper, the social treasury has been accelerated, the spot discount has returned to a high level this week, the import price ratio has been opened again, and traders have stepped up customs declaration for imports, so the inventory growth rate in the bonded area this week is slower than that of last week.

Copper Scrap Payability Coefficients Hold Exceptionally Firm as Supply-Demand Mismatch Defies Traditional Market Logic
In May, copper prices surged before retracing, yet copper scrap payability coefficients remained exceptionally firm. Transactions for Millberry stabilized at a high level of 98.5%, while No. 2 copper became the market highlight, with its coefficient climbing from around 95% to 96%–97% due to the premium upside of its gold and silver by-products. Driven by stricter domestic policies and tax compliance, China demand remained robust. Conversely, tight overseas scrap supply persisted, and this structural mismatch kept import payability coefficients elevated and sticky for the short term. Under the current landscape of tight global supply and resilient demand, the traditional market logic of "surging copper prices driving down payability coefficients" has effectively become obsolete.
