SMM: Chinese electric car maker BYD will supply electric vehicle batteries to American carmaker Ford Motor, according to a document on the website of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, citing people familiar with the matter.

Ford's joint venture with Changan Automobile in China is seeking government approval to produce a plug-in hybrid vehicle equipped with BYD batteries, according to the documents. This marks the first time that BYD has reached a battery supply agreement with a major global carmaker.

BYD said it would supply electric vehicle components, including batteries and power management chips. Ford said last year that it planned to launch more than 30 new or redesigned models in China by the end of 2021, more than 1/3 of which will be electric vehicles. Ford and BYD didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

In addition, sources also said that BAIC is now listed as a customer of BYD's NMC battery, and the addition of a new OEM as a customer may be another step for BYD to become an auto parts supplier through its FinDreams brand.

Qingdao Soer is also rumored to be using BYD's lithium iron phosphate product, which is likely to be a blade battery. On March 29, BYD announced the official launch of "Blade Battery", which breaks through the energy density bottleneck of lithium iron phosphate battery pack in terms of battery structure, and finally achieves the design goal of installing more batteries in the same space by improving the space utilization of the battery pack. As a result, the volume of the blade battery is 50% higher than the energy density, and the range is the same as that of the high-energy ternary lithium battery.
