SMM5, June 27: South Africa's mining production is likely to fall by 8 to 10 per cent this year due to the new crown epidemic, the (Minerals Council) chief executive of the South African Mining Commission said in a videoconference a few days ago. South Africa is the world's largest producer of platinum and chromium and a major producer of gold and diamonds. Mines across South Africa were temporarily closed after the anti-epidemic blockade began at the end of March. Since May 1, South African open-pit mines have been allowed to produce at full capacity again, while deep mines that are more difficult to mine have been limited to 50 per cent.

Peter Steenkamp, chief executive of Harmony Gold, said that from June 1, the country's mines will be fully operational, when the country will allow all mines to fully open again, which will take a month. He said Harmony's acquisition of AngloGoldAshanti's Mponeng mine was not expected to be completed by the end of July.

Previously, about 196 workers at the Mponeng mine tested positive for the new crown virus, causing the mine to close.
