On May 18, 88300 new cases were confirmed worldwide, and as of 14:00 on May 19th, the total number of confirmed cases worldwide exceeded 4.8 million! The cumulative death toll exceeded 310000. The number of new people in a single day continues to remain high, and the global fight against epidemic is still in a difficult period.

The cumulative diagnosis surpassed that of China, and India extended the national blockade for the third time.

India has confirmed 4630 new cases on the 18th, and as of 14:00 on May 19, a total of 100300 cases have been confirmed, making it the 11th country in the world with more than 100000 confirmed cases. The Times of India reported that India has surpassed China in the total number of confirmed cases, ranking 11th in the world, and is expected to soon overtake Iran to become the top 10 country in the total number of confirmed cases in the world.

The epidemic situation in India is becoming more and more serious. in order to prevent the spread of the virus, the Indian government began to implement a national blockade on March 25 this year, and the latter two extensions were originally scheduled to expire on May 17 local time. On May 17, the Indian government once again announced that the blockade measures would be extended to May 31, but at the same time, some blockade restrictions would be relaxed.

However, with the continuous extension of the blockade time, a series of social problems have been gradually exposed, such as the surge in unemployment, poor riots and violent law enforcement incidents by the police. At the same time, the blockade led to the unemployment of a large number of migrant workers, and the population movement brought about by the return of migrant workers further increased the risk of epidemic transmission. On the 17th, the Minister of Health of the Indian state of Goa said that 8 to 10 migrant workers who had returned to Goa from Delhi had tested positive for the new crown virus after their arrival. India's population density is among the highest in the world, especially in slums, regardless of population density, health conditions, and medical conditions are all worrying. at present, the number of new cases in India in a single day is still on the rise, and whether the repeated extension of the blockade can effectively control the spread of the virus, SMM will continue to track.

Australia Reviews Anti-Dumping Duties on Galvanized Steel from India, Malaysia, Vietnam Amid Zinc Concerns
On September 9, 2026, Australia initiated its second sunset review of anti-dumping measures on galvanized steel sheet from India, Malaysia and Vietnam, and separately launched a sunset review of countervailing measures on imports from India. The review covers July 2025-June 2026, with the final report expected by February 11, 2027. As galvanized steel is the largest end-use sector for zinc, the measures directly affect export costs and competitiveness, potentially impacting Australia’s domestic zinc demand and supply chain. Maintaining the duties would provide some protection for domestic steel and coating capacity, while termination could increase low-priced imports and affect regional zinc consumption. The final outcome remains subject to the authorities’ determination.
