SMM May 19th spot Express of Ternary Materials: orders in the power market drop sharply and the price of ternary materials is difficult to rise.

Published: May 19, 2020 12:46 (GMT+8)

SMM May 19th ternary material spot comment: at present, the mainstream quotation of 523 power market is 11-118000 yuan / ton, the downstream power market demand is weak, overseas orders continue to reduce, the market turnover is less, and the price remains unchanged. 523 digital market quotation is mainly 9.5-105000 yuan / ton, the market competition is fierce, many enterprises reduce the price to ship the goods.

The price of cobalt salt in the upstream rose slightly, and the price of nickel salt remained strong, but the demand in the downstream of the precursor was weak, the price was difficult, and the price of ternary materials was difficult to rise. Although overseas European car companies have resumed production one after another, the speed of resuming work of the whole car factory is relatively slow, and the overseas export order of the material factory has not been resumed for the time being.

Orders in the domestic power market have dropped sharply this month, and some large battery manufacturers have no purchasing demand, which has a great impact on the whole market. The operating rate of a small number of large ternary material factories has dropped sharply this month, while the operating rate of other material factories has basically been maintained last month.

The demand in this month's digital market is the same as that of last month, but the reduction in demand in the power market has led to an aggravation of the imbalance between supply and demand in the whole market, fierce competition for enterprise orders, and difficult for the price of ternary materials to rise.

CATL Surpasses LG Energy Solution, Leads in Global Battery Patents Over Past Decade
[CATL overtakes LG Energy Solution to rank first globally in battery patents over the past decade] A latest statistical report released by PatSnap's global patent database shows that in the ranking of total patents held by global battery enterprises over the past decade (October 2016 – September 2026), CATL has jumped to first place with 26,574 simple patent families, surpassing South Korea's LG Energy Solution (22,597), which had long held the top spot, by approximately 3,900 patents. This marks the first time a Chinese battery enterprise has claimed the global No. 1 position in total patents over a ten-year window, and it represents the most significant shift in the global battery patent competitive landscape over the past decade. The statistics also point out that from a domestic perspective, CATL ranks first across all three dimensions—total patents, power batteries, and solid-state batteries—across three windows (all-time, past decade, and past three years), holding an absolute leading position with a solid top ranking and spearheading the innovation landscape of China's battery industry. Chinese producers overall have also made notable advances, with EVE, SVOLT, Gotion High-tech, and BYD firmly in the top ten. The center of global battery innovation is shifting from Japan and South Korea to China.

For LMO, enterprises generally maintained production during the National Day holiday, but order saturation was clearly insufficient, and market trading remained weak. The direct trigger for this round of demand weakening came from wild swings in lithium carbonate prices. In September, lithium carbonate prices saw a notable decline, and the market became deeply divided over the future trend. Downstream battery cell manufacturers and related buyers widely adopted a wait-and-see strategy of "rush to buy amid continuous price rise and hold back amid price downturn" — worried that prices would continue to fall after chasing highs, they generally suspended large-scale purchases after entering October, maintaining only a small-batch, as-needed restocking pace.
