SMM5, March 14: Indonesian free port company (PT Freeport) is currently stepping up efforts to detect the new crown virus among its employees and contract workers.

The mining area has about 50000 rapid polymerase chain reaction test kits, the company said on Wednesday

The Grasberg copper and gold mine is located in Mika County, Papua Province, Indonesia, where the number of COVID-19 infections had reached 112 as of Sunday.

"to ensure the safety of its more than 25000 employees and contract workers, the company's medical service providers are conducting extensive tests," the company said in a statement. "

Parent company Freeport McMoRan Inc said last month that it would cut costs by 18 per cent, or $13 billion, in 2020 because of the collapse in copper prices caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in the number of new crown cases has also prompted the head of municipal government to urge the president to allow Freeport to temporarily close the mine, according to local media reports.

Riza Pratama, a spokesman for Indonesia's Freeport, said the mine's operations had not been disrupted.

In 2019, Grasberg copper and gold minerals 272200 tons of copper.
