On April 16, about 96000 new cases were confirmed worldwide. As of 18:00 on 17 April, the cumulative number of confirmed cases worldwide exceeded 2.1 million.

33000 new cases were confirmed in the United States on the 16th, and the new trend continued to rebound. As of 19:00 on 17 April, a total of 670000 cases had been confirmed and more than 34000 deaths had been reported. In Asia, the development of the epidemic in India is not optimistic, the new trend continues to rise, and the number of confirmed cases in the largest slums in the region has risen to 86. In Europe, the epidemic in France was the most repeated, with 17000 new cases on the 16th, more than three times the number of people added on the 15th.

After Mr Abe declared a state of emergency in all parts of Japan yesterday, the Japanese government launched another "big move" today. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he would distribute 100000 yen (6600 yuan) to each national and need to apply online and by mail, the Japan Broadcasting Association reported on the afternoon of the 17th.

At present, the cumulative diagnosis trend in Japan is in the stage of rapid rise. On the 16th, 574 new cases were confirmed in Japan. As of 18:00 on 17 April, a total of 9590 cases were confirmed locally, which is about to break out of the country. At the same time, a number of cluster outbreaks have occurred in various parts of Japan. In order to control the development of the epidemic, it is highly likely that all tourist attractions will be closed during the Golden week in May.

BHP-Amazon copper EAC pilot draws mining-sector interest in lower-carbon labelling
Spanish-language mining media report that BHP and Amazon have rolled out the first lower-emissions copper pilot at Escondida using Environmental Attribute Certificates, certifying emissions reductions within the mining setting rather than offsetting them elsewhere. Unveiled on 22 September 2026, the pilot leverages Escondida's renewable electricity and desalinated water, with Amazon retiring the certificates to match lower-carbon attributes to its AI infrastructure. Escondida produces about 1.2 million tonnes of copper annually as the world's largest mine, and the label is expected to serve growing demand for low-carbon metal procurement.
