[April 15 SMM lead Internal Morning meeting record] downstream Purchasing sentiment weakens spot uptick Down

Published: Apr 15, 2020 09:44 (GMT+8)

Summary of lead morning meeting:

Macro:

It is reported that China's foreign trade returned to the surplus in March. In US dollar terms, China's exports were-6.6% year on year, and imports were-0.9%, both of which were significantly smaller than those from January to February. The trade balance turned to US $19.9 billion. After the resumption of work and resumption of production in March, some orders delayed due to the impact of the epidemic were delivered, allowing exports to improve in March compared with the previous two months, in the face of a sharp drop in external demand as a result of the deterioration of the overseas epidemic. [Lido]

With the consent of the State Council, from April 15 to December 31, the General Administration of Customs shall temporarily waive the levy of deferred tax interest on domestic sales of processing trade goods sold by enterprises.

The (IMF) predicts that the global economy will experience its worst recession since the Great Depression, and that the situation could be even worse if the virus lingers or makes a comeback. It estimates that global GDP will shrink by 3 per cent this year and that global trade in goods and services is likely to fall by 11 per cent. The epidemic crisis also "poses a very serious threat to the stability of the global financial system".

As the epidemic stabilizes, Europe embarks on plans to return to work and production, some schools and shops will be opened in Austria and Denmark this week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will discuss the plan with state governors on Wednesday, and the European Commission has drafted a plan to coordinate national measures. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the epidemic "certainly" has not yet reached its peak.

While major oil producers such as Saudi Arabia have agreed to cut production again from May, production will remain open, with Saudi crude exports of 9.3 million barrels a day so far this month. Crude oil inventory growth will continue for at least a few more weeks. [Lido]

Fundamentals:

Shanghai period lead strong upward, but downstream fear high careful mining, inquiry enthusiasm decline, holder quotation rising water down one after another, among them, Shanghai market Shuikoushan, southern lead to Shanghai lead 2005 contract up 400-450 yuan / ton quotation, Wuxi market Shuikoushan lead to Shanghai lead 2005 contract rose 400 yuan / ton quotation, primary lead smelter to delivery long list mainly; recycled lead, but the actual transaction is still very few.

Lead price:

Lun lead trend is still in a strong trend, but the top is still under pressure in the 40-day moving average, mainly short-term shock; according to the last notice, there will be no night trading since February 3;

SMM1# lead prices are expected to fall by 100-150 yuan per tonne today.

[Geelong battery pilot begins operation to help businesses cut power bills]
New Zealand energy storage company ArcActive has switched on its pilot of a re-engineered lead-acid battery system at Deakin's new Renewable Grid-Connected Battery Testing Facility at its Waurn Ponds campus in Geelong, with support from Origin Energy. The system aims to help businesses cut power bills by making battery storage cheaper and easier to install, allowing more businesses to store solar electricity for later use and buy less power when prices are high. The system builds on lead-acid technology already used to support critical infrastructure, including telecommunications, hospitals and data centres. ArcActive has redesigned the batteries' internal structure, using a fabric framework to support the material that stores and releases energy. The design aims to extend cycling life while preserving low cost. The pilot operates within Deakin's renewable energy microgrid, which provides electricity generation and storage for operational use. ArcActive CEO Stuart McKenzie said the pilot was a step forward in making battery storage accessible to more businesses. He said the cost of installing a battery goes beyond the battery itself, with businesses also needing to account for engineering work, approvals, insurance and safety measures, and that if they do not know what their site will need or how much it will cost, they can be reluctant to invest. He said lead-acid technology offered a familiar starting point, as engineers, approval authorities and insurers already know it and there are established pathways for approving and insuring these installations. ArcActive is targeting commercial and industrial businesses that could benefit from storage but face costs and complexity that can prevent projects from proceeding. McKenzie said the company wants businesses to be able to deploy storage through a more standardised, repeatable process, with greater confidence about the cost, the approval requirements and the financial return.

[Will Post-Holiday Supply Recovery and Weak Demand Pressure China's Lead Ingot Market?]
In mid-October, China's lead ingot market saw a cautious recovery in supply while downstream demand remained persistently soft, with the market characterized by low inventories, tight raw material availability and a wait-and-see stance among buyers. After the holiday, smelters ramped up production while downstream battery makers prioritized inventory drawdown over active replenishment. Supply-side recovery remained constrained. Native lead ingot smelters in Central and North China completed maintenance and resumed operations by late September, lifting the comprehensive operating rate, but actual output gains were limited. Weekly native lead ingot output recovered but remained below the first-half average due to tight concentrate supply and low processing fees. On the secondary lead side, a large smelter in East China was expected to resume production in October.

Post-holiday supply is returning while consumption lags, with smelters ramping up production and downstream battery makers prioritizing inventory drawdown over active replenishment. Supply-side recovery remains constrained: primary lead smelters in Central and North China completed maintenance and resumed operations by late September, lifting the comprehensive operating rate, but actual output gains were limited. Due to tight concentrate supply and low processing fees, weekly primary lead output has recovered but remains below the first-half average. On the secondary lead side, a large smelter in East China was expected to resume production in October.
