SMM3, 27 Mar: Anglo American Platinum issued an announcement on March 27, as the statement issued by the President of the Republic of South Africa on the 21-day national blockade on March 23 will take effect at midnight on the 26th (Thursday) to help curb the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa. Anglo American Resources Group said that it has always remained unconditional in terms of security. The health and well-being of employees and contractors remains our top priority.

The company has begun to reduce its controlled underground mining operations at the Amandelbult,Modikwa and Kroondal joint ventures, as well as at the Mortimer smelter and the Waterval smelter, where concentrates are obtained from these operations, in order to maintain them safely and during lockdown.

In accordance with the regulations of the Government of South Africa, Anglo American Platinum has assessed its ability to continue certain operations on a reduced basis, pending further planning, and mining activities at open-pit Mogalakwena mines and mechanized Mototolo mines are likely to continue to decline. The Polokwane smelter can also smelt this material into furnace hair. Following a thorough risk assessment to determine the safety of employees and contractors on site, additional safety, health and hygiene regulations have been developed to protect the health of employees who will continue to work during temporary shutdowns.

Critical care and maintenance will continue in all operations and will include ongoing repairs to the (ACP) B phase of the Anglo converter plant to ensure asset integrity and prepare for safe operational growth. All parts and equipment required for phase B maintenance are on site and the maintenance time is expected to remain at 80 days until around 25 May 2020.

A number of designated basic services will also continue, including safety; mine maintenance; safety management of tailings facilities; water treatment; community water supply; accommodation requirements; health, safety and emergency response; and important headquarters services.

The company remains aware of the significant impact of the shutdown on its employees and has reached an agreement to pay base wages, housing allowances to all employees and to continue to provide medical and pension fund contributions to the company for the entire 21-day lock-up period. In addition, the company recognizes that our operations play a vital role in the local communities in which it operates, and throughout the lock-in period, we will remain committed to the provision of services, including the supply of drinking water, health care, emergency assistance and the maintenance of civilian infrastructure. We will continue to see how to further support our communities during these difficult times.

Anglo Platinum has a clear responsibility to protect the integrity of our business and operations and will ensure a controlled and planned shutdown of access to maintenance and maintenance operations. It is essential that once the lock-in restrictions are lifted and normal operations resume as soon as possible, we will be ready for a safe start to support South Africa's economic recovery.
