Cotecna: sets up New Commercial Laboratory in South Africa to Test Minerals such as Manganese Ore and Chrome Ore in South Africa

SMM3, 24 Jun: recently, Cotecna opened a new commercial laboratory in Richards Bay, South Africa. The new facility will become the largest commercial laboratory in Richards Bay, and the first laboratory in South Africa to provide both ISO 17025 and ISO 17020 certification services.

Demand for commercial mineral testing facilities in South Africa has been identified in the larger regional development and growth plan of Cotecna. Previously used sample preparation facilities could only accommodate coal samples, so a new facility was designed and constructed during 2019 to provide customers with weighing, sampling, sample preparation and analysis services for all minerals and metals exported through Richards Bay.

The strategic location of the laboratory in (Richards Bay), Richards Bay, where there are more than 30 mineral commodities for ferrochromium, non-ferrous metal concentrates, manganese and other minerals, including the full export of coal from South Africa, enables Cotecna to provide customized services to existing upstream coal customers, metals and minerals markets.

The new facility will serve as a hub for sending semi-prepared samples from various inland satellite sample preparation facilities to the Centre and will have the capacity to accommodate double-stream sample preparation and analysis of a wide range of commodities. There is a dedicated coal preparation area with associated laboratories and a mining area focusing on the preparation and analysis of commodities, including chromite, chromium concentrate, manganese ore and iron ore.
