SMM2, 18 Jun:, Oyu Tolgoi today submitted to the Mongolian government a feasibility study report on the Oyu Tolgoi Power supply Project (TTPP Project), which involves the construction of a 300MW coal-fired power plant. At the same time, Rio is exploring the use of alternative resources to generate electricity, such as renewable energy.

Under an agreement signed between the Mongolian government of Turquoise Hill, a Canadian mineral exploration and development company, and Rio Tinto, Rio Tinto is obliged to complete the power supply project for the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia by June 30, 2023 at an estimated cost of about US $924 million.

CEO Arnaud Soirat, Rio's diamond and copper division, said: "Rio Tinto, Turquoise Hill and the Mongolian government are committed to providing long-term reliable electricity to Oyu Tolgoi and are working together to achieve this goal."
