The US dollar held steady against a basket its rivals on Monday

SHANGHAI, Jan 14 (SMM) – This is a roundup of global macroeconomic news last night and what is expected in the day ahead.

Last night

The US dollar held steady against a basket its rivals on Monday, while sterling was the weakest performer after tepid growth increased the likelihood that the Bank of England will cut interest rates this month.

Oil prices extended their decline, while copper prices rose to an eight-month peak. LME copper added 1.4% on Monday to be the best performer among base metals. Tin advanced 0.8% and zinc gained 0.3%, while aluminium and lead shed 0.8% and nickel dropped 0.9%.

SHFE base metals performed similarly overnight. Tin rose 1.1%, copper climbed 0.9%, and zinc increased 0.2%, while aluminium sank 0.3%, nickel fell 0.7% and lead slipped 1%.

The US Treasury Department announced Monday that the US has removed China from a list of countries considered currency manipulators. This came just two days before top trade negotiators for Washington and Beijing sign a key “phase one” trade deal.

The UK economy unexpectedly shrank in the month before the general election, with gross domestic product (GDP) contracting by 0.3% in November, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Monday. That was the sharpest decline in seven months. Analysts had predicted that the economy would continue to flat-line in November, following the 0.1% growth seen in the previous two months. Compared to the same month in 2018, the UK economy grew by 0.6% in November, the slowest growth since the spring of 2012, the ONS noted.

Day ahead

China will release its December trade data, while the US will publish its December consumer inflation data and weekly crude inventory data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Chengtun Mining: Subsidiary Plans to Acquire 65% Equity in Tibet Haiteng Industrial for 709 Million Yuan
Chengtun Mining announced in an evening filing that its subsidiary Sichuan Shengfengyuan Mining Co., Ltd. plans to acquire 65% equity in Tibet Haiteng Industrial Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Tibet Haiteng Industrial") held by Liu Zongjun for 708.5 million yuan. Upon completion of the transaction, Tibet Haiteng Industrial will become a controlled subsidiary of the company and be included in the company's consolidated financial statements. According to the announcement, Tibet Haiteng Industrial holds the exploration right for the "Bagala (East) Lead-Zinc Mine Exploration in Mozhugongka County and Linzhou County, Lhasa, Tibet." The right was first established in 2003 and has undergone multiple renewals and changes. The new license was issued on August 28, 2026, with a validity period from July 28, 2026 to July 27, 2031, covering an exploration area of 42.0668 square kilometers. According to the exploration report issued by the Northwest Geological Exploration Institute of China Metallurgical Geology Bureau on September 30, 2025, in addition to lead and zinc resources, the identified silver metal content has reached the standard for a large-scale silver mine in China. The company stated: The silver metal content of the silver-lead-zinc mine to be acquired has reached the scale of a large deposit, while lead and zinc are both medium-sized deposits. The grades of silver, lead, and zinc are moderate, and the ore quality is relatively good. Upon completion of the acquisition, the company's resource ownership of silver, lead, zinc, and other metals will be effectively increased, further optimizing the company's mineral resource portfolio, expanding future development space, and enhancing core competitiveness and risk resilience. The acquisition aligns with the company's long-term development strategy, is conducive to consolidating the company's comprehensive competitive strength in the non-ferrous metals mining sector, and serves the long-term and overall interests of the company and all shareholders.
