Rare earth permanent magnet motor is a new type of permanent magnet motor appeared in the early 1970s. Because of its high magnetic energy product and high coercivity (especially high intrinsic coercivity), rare earth permanent magnet motor has a series of advantages, such as small size, light weight, high efficiency, good characteristics and so on.
Because of the excellent magnetic performance of rare earth permanent magnet material, it can establish a very strong permanent magnetic field without external energy after magnetization. The rare earth permanent magnet motor which is used to replace the electric excitation site of the traditional motor is not only high efficiency, but also has the advantages of simple structure, reliable operation, small size and light weight. It can not only achieve the high performance which can not be compared with the traditional electric excitation motor (such as ultra-high efficiency, ultra-high speed, ultra-high response speed), but also can be made into special motor which can meet the specific operation requirements, such as elevator traction motor, automobile special motor and so on. Rare earth permanent magnet motor is widely used in aviation, aerospace, national defense, equipment manufacturing, industrial and agricultural production and daily life. It includes permanent magnet synchronous motor, permanent magnet generator, DC motor, brushless DC motor, AC permanent magnet servo motor, permanent magnet linear motor, special permanent magnet motor and related control system, covering almost the whole motor industry.
The working principle of rare earth permanent magnet motor is the same as that of electrically excited synchronous motor. The difference is that the former is excited by permanent magnet instead of excitation winding. When the three-phase stator winding of permanent magnet motor (each difference of 120 °electric angle) is connected with three-phase alternating current with frequency f, a rotating magnetic field with synchronous speed will be generated. In the steady state, the main pole magnetic field rotates synchronously with the rotating magnetic field, so the rotor speed is also the synchronous speed. Rare earth permanent magnet generator
Compared with the traditional generator, the permanent magnet synchronous generator does not need the collector ring and brush device, the structure is simple, and the failure rate is reduced. Permanent magnet generator is also used as the auxiliary exciter of large turbogenerator. In the 1980s, China successfully developed the 40kVA--160kVA rare earth permanent magnet auxiliary exciter with the largest capacity in the world at that time. Equipped with 200MW--600MW turbogenerator, the reliability of power station operation was greatly improved.

Because the rare earth permanent magnet has the characteristics of high remanence density, high coercivity and high magnetic energy product, the motor can be allowed to have large air gap length and air gap density, so it has great flexibility in the placement of permanent magnets and the design of magnetic circuit structure.
