SMM12, March 20: Niklas Lindahl, Department of (Chalmers University of Technology) Physics, Charmes University of Technology, Sweden, said in an interview recently, "in the next 10-15 years, in addition to individual fields, aluminum ion batteries are expected to be compared with lithium ion batteries. Once the industrial scale is established, aluminum ion battery (AIBs) will show good performance, low environmental pollution, low price and so on."

From a sustainable point of view, lithium-ion batteries use scarce resources such as graphite, lithium and cobalt as raw materials. In addition, due to the influence of high temperature in the synthesis process, the emission of cathode is also very high. In contrast, the raw materials of aluminum ion batteries are more readily available and can be synthesized organically at lower temperatures.

"Aluminum ion batteries have not yet been produced, and it is difficult to determine which material will eventually be used," it added. But our inference is based on low costs. "

Aluminum is currently worth $1.80 / kg, on the London Metal Exchange, while lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide are valued at $9.2 / kg and $11.2 / kg, respectively.

The Niklas Lindahl team is working to overcome the difficulties in order to commercialize aluminum ion batteries.
