Nyrstar says Port Piri lead smelter is about to restart the furnace

Published: Nov 18, 2019 13:41

SMM11, 18 May: the reboot of the main top TSL furnace and its peripherals at the Port Pirie lead smelter in Australia is in its final stages as part of an investment of A $20 million (US $13.71 million) to restore the plant to full production. The project will enable the smelter to resume full production.

Nyrstar, a subsidiary of Tok (Trafigura), a global metals trader, said it had obtained the approval needed to restart it from (SafeWork South Australia), a regulator, the South Australian Safety Service.

The sintering plant was closed on 6 November to facilitate the restart of the work required for TSL. Nyrstar said it would take several days to prepare the first feed to start heating the furnace to "solidify" the newly replaced refractory brick. Recent investment and refurbishment of major TSL will lead to further reductions in emissions, improved maneuverability and contribute to a more stable operation of the plant, it said.

Port Pirie is the only major production facility for Nyrstar. Its lead metal production fell 7 per cent to 160000 metric tons in 2018 from a year earlier, suspended production in June due to technical problems and issued a force majeure statement, followed by a further shutdown in August as a result of the smelter accident. Under the off-take agreement, most of the lead metal is sold to Tok.

Tok (Trafigura) did not immediately disclose the full expected production of Port Peri (Port Pirie) and when it would reach that level.

A grand event for thousands of people in China's non-ferrous metal industry

Shanghai colored net (SMM) annual meeting is the annual event of the metal industry, with an annual participation scale of thousands of people, domestic and foreign metal industry people gathered together to review and summarize the experience and harvest of the year, and lay the groundwork for the production, operation and operation of the coming year.

This year's "2019 China Nonferrous Metals Industry Annual meeting and 2020 (SMM) Metal Price Forecast Conference" was jointly created by SMM and China Renewable Resources Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance and Shanghai Nonferrous Metals Industry Association. At the same time, the first "China Renewable Metals Industry chain Development Summit Forum" was held, and SMM metal price forecasting conference and waste battery recycling exchange were set up for you to enjoy. From the development of non-ferrous metal market to the recycling of renewable resources, from the detailed explanation of policies and systems to the research and development of industrial chain technology.

This is not only a meeting, but also an industry exchange of information, collision thinking sparks of brainstorming!

Lead Prices Stagnant, Smelters Maintain Firm Offers Amid Losses
Lead prices were in the doldrums, while secondary lead smelters maintained firm offers due to losses. The mainstream spot order ex-factory prices including tax narrowed the discount to the SMM #1 lead average price by 100 yuan/mt, shifting to a premium of 0–25 yuan/mt, with some smelters halting offers and sales.

"Domestic Secondary Crude Lead Market Slows as Holidays Approach, Smelters Halt Production"
Pre-holiday stockpiling by downstream enterprises had largely concluded, and a few had already entered the holiday period, completely suspending procurement. Next week, secondary lead smelters will enter a concentrated wave of production halts and holidays, resulting in sluggish trading activity in the spot market. Offers for spot refined lead orders were sparse, with prices moving in line with the market.

Sluggish Transactions in Domestic Secondary Crude Lead Market, Prices at 15,250-15,400 Yuan/mt
The domestic secondary crude lead market experienced sluggish transactions. As of February 6, 2026, the ex-factory tax-exclusive offers for domestic secondary crude lead stood at 15,250-15,400 yuan/mt. Downstream refined lead and alloy smelters gradually entered the holiday period, showing weak stockpiling willingness. Overseas lead ingot suppliers basically halted transactions with China due to poor consumption in the Chinese market, with only some previously concluded shipments maintaining normal in-transit transportation. The trading atmosphere in the secondary crude lead market will continue to weaken next week.
