Yesterday, the Chilean government announced that it would give up hosting the (APEC) leaders' informal meeting scheduled for November this year. So far, there is no alternative venue for the APEC meeting. Trump had previously said he would meet with the Chinese head of state on the sidelines of the summit and was likely to sign the first phase of a trade agreement between the two countries.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said Wednesday that the administration is still looking forward to the first phase of a trade agreement with China in November.

Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said on Wednesday that the United States and China were moving towards the first phase of a trade agreement next month, raising new optimism about a final deal.

A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on the 31st that the economic and trade teams of China and the United States have maintained close communication and that the consultations are progressing smoothly. The two sides will continue to push forward the consultations and other work as planned. The leaders of the two sides will speak again on Friday.
