Tangshan to implement level II response to heavy pollution from Oct 31

Grade-B steelmakers should suspend their sintering and pelletising machines

SHANGHAI, Oct 30 (SMM) – Tangshan, China’s top steelmaking hub in Hebei province, will implement level II measures to combat heavy smog from Thursday morning.

This comes only a week after the city stopped implementing its last round of level II anti-smog measures that began on October 15.

Following the start of the anti-smog response at CST 8:00, steelmakers in Tangshan that are graded as B on environmental status should suspend their sintering and pelletising machines. They will be allowed to recover their sintering and pelletising capacity by half at the most after the smog alert remains in place for 120 hours.

Grade-C steelmakers in the city, meanwhile, are required to operate at the lowest rate in the past year.

The recent heavy pollution has prompted east China’s Auhui province to issue an orange alert late on Tuesday, while a smog alert of the same level will come into effect across most part of Hebei province on Friday.

Another major steelmaking hub of Handan in Hebei province will begin to implement level II anti-smog measures from CST 6:00 November 1.
