Australia issues new battery installation standards

SMM: it is reported that the Australian Standards Institute has released the latest battery installation standards. Manufacturers in the country's energy storage industry say the regulation will make it more expensive to install energy storage systems in the future.

It is understood that Australian battery installation standards have been drafted for five years to fill gaps in Australian domestic energy storage industry safety guidelines, especially for batteries in energy storage systems.

Known as "AS/NZS 5139: 2019, Electrical installation-Battery system Safety for Power conversion equipment", the Australian Standards Institute says it can improve the battery energy storage industry.

Some major battery storage system manufacturers believe that the revised and now released versions of the standard are no better than their previous versions.

"the new standards will make the deployment of energy storage systems more difficult, complex and costly," said James Sturch of Sonnen Australia. "

Consumers will focus on the price of the energy storage system, not on safety or other technical specifications, especially because the installation of fire fighting facilities may cost more.

"the main message of the new standard is to treat all energy storage systems as untested energy storage technologies, and they are all the same," Sturch said. "as a result, consumers may choose the cheapest energy storage product rather than focusing on the brand and quality of the energy storage system."
