EAF steelmakers cut production on tighter scrap supply

SHANGHAI, Oct 14 (SMM) – The smaller scale Chinese electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers slashed production in early October, as raw material scrap supply tightened after blast furnace steel mills recovered from anti-smog production curbs.

As of October 11, operating rates across EAF steelmakers stood at 57%, down 2 percentage points from the mid September, according to the latest SMM survey.

Higher steel scrap costs deepened losses across EAF mills, with tax-included prices of steel scrap in Changzhou rising 80 yuan/mt to 2,560 yuan/mt from levels seen before the National Day holiday.

EAF steelmakers saw a loss of 226 yuan/mt as of October 11, with tax-included costs standing at 3,906 yuan/mt. The loss stood at just about 50 yuan/mt as of the end of September.

China's Cast Aluminum Alloy Inventory Rises for Fifth Week, Demand Improvement Slow
[SMM Aluminum Alloy Flash] China's social inventory of cast aluminum alloy ingots recorded 34,100 mt this week, up 1,100 mt WoW, marking the fifth consecutive week of inventory buildup. The traditional peak consumption season is gradually kicking off, but end-use demand improvement remains limited, with downstream purchases still mainly need-based and inventory digestion relatively slow. Meanwhile, purchases by some futures and spot traders and trade links continue to provide some support to social inventory. In the short term, as demand from the September peak season is gradually released, the pace of social inventory buildup may narrow, but the inventory inflection point still awaits further demand realization.

Cyclic Materials Opens First U.S. Commercial Recycling Facility, Recovering Copper from 25,000 t/y
Cyclic Materials has officially opened its first U.S. commercial-scale recycling facility in Mesa, Arizona, capable of processing up to 25,000 tonnes of magnet-bearing end-of-life products annually. In addition to recovering rare earth magnets, the facility separates copper, aluminum and steel for reintegration into U.S. manufacturing. More than 7,000 tonnes of feedstock have already been delivered, with first commercial shipments expected later in September. The plant adds a new U.S. recycling route for recovering copper and other critical materials from end-of-life vehicles, electronics and magnet-containing equipment.

Jintian Copper’s High-End Green Recycled Copper Product Sales Surge 168% YoY in H1 2026 中文快讯
Jintian Copper reported that sales of its high-end green recycled copper products jumped 168% YoY in H1 2026. The company has developed a closed-loop recycled copper chain covering collection, purification and downstream processing, with recycled copper now used across copper strip, wire, busbars, magnet wire and tubes. The sharp increase highlights the growing penetration of recycled feedstock into higher-value copper products rather than only conventional secondary applications.
