Arrivals in Guangdong expand zinc social inventories on week

Inventories are expected to extend increases in Aug, with growth capped by maintenance across smelters

SHANGHAI, Aug 9 (SMM) – Zinc social inventories across Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangdong accumulated this week, contributed by higher stocks in Guangdong on greater arrivals from domestic smelters.

SMM data showed that stocks across the three areas expanded by 4,400 mt from Friday August 2 and by 2,800 mt from Monday August 5 to stand at 148,700 mt as of Friday August 9.

Arrived cargoes in Shanghai and Tianjin remained limited. Downstream consumers stockpiled as required after zinc prices fell below the 19,000 yuan/mt level.

Zinc inventories are expected to extend increases in August, but concentrated maintenance across smelters will cap the growth.

MMG Q3 2026 Zinc Production Down 5% YoY, Rosebery Mine Output Slumps
MMG released its third-quarter 2026 production report on October 14. Total zinc production for the quarter reached 55.9kt, down 5% YoY, mainly due to lower output at the Rosebery mine. Dugald River produced 47.8kt of zinc in zinc concentrate during the quarter, broadly unchanged YoY. The mine remains on track to achieve the upper end of its full-year zinc production guidance of 170–180kt. Rosebery produced 8.13kt of zinc during the quarter, down 23% YoY, primarily due to reduced ore supply following seismic events in the X-South orebody area since July. As a result, the company lowered its 2026 zinc production guidance for the mine to 32–37kt from the previous 45–55kt.

Secondary Zinc Oxide Prices Remain Elevated Amid Market Stalemate in Q3[SMM Analysis]
In Q3, Secondary Zinc Oxide prices remained elevated amid a tug-of-war between raw material cost support and weak downstream demand. Tight steel ash supply pushed up raw material costs, while downstream buyers showed limited acceptance of high-priced material, restricting further price increases. How will Secondary Zinc Oxide prices perform in Q4?
