SMM News: natural resources giant Glencore has signed an agreement with Sterling, a Swedish clean technology company, to build a power generation facility that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce power costs at its Lydenburg ferrochromium smelter. When completed, it will reduce the need to purchase electricity from the South African National Power Company, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the smelter by more than 80,000 tons per year.

The PWR BLOK 400F provided by Sterling in Sweden uses a Sterling engine, which is an external combustion engine rather than an internal combustion engine, which is more suitable for the volatilization of industrial exhaust gases. It successfully piloted the Mogale alloy plant in Afarak SA in Krugersdorp to convert its own exhaust gas from the ferrochromium smelter into electricity from the power plant.

Rising electricity costs are a major concern for the smelting industry, which is under pressure from rising electricity prices. The equipment, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the smelter by more than 80, 000 tons a year, will significantly reduce the cost of electricity from South Africa's national power company (Eskom).
