SMM7 16 July: July 15, local time, Peru Tia Maria copper mine opponents blocked the main coastal highway, resulting in a certain degree of traffic chaos, affecting the passage of normal freight vehicles.

Opponents of the project had previously said there would be an indefinite strike until the permit was revoked. Because they think the project will disrupt local agricultural production and pollute water sources, although Southern Copper (Southern Copper) has plans to build a desalination plant, they are still opposed.

At least six people have been killed in protests against the project over the past decade. So about 400 police officers have been sent to the area to prevent possible violence.

Southern Copper (Southern Copper) also said it would not start building the mine if it could not reach an agreement with the local community.

The project is expected to produce 120000 tons of copper a year. The Tia Maria copper mine is an important part of Grupo Mexico's plan, and Raul Jacob5, the company's chief financial officer, said last month that South Copper would also invest an additional $10 billion in the plan to increase copper production from 987000 tons this year to 1.81 million tons in 2026. "relevant news-Peru's mining license granted to the Southern Copper Tia Maria project is expected to produce 120000 tons of copper per year.
