Ningbo Enaluminized Aluminum: a New heavy Metal Air Battery provides a New solution for Emergency Power supply

July 12, 2019, China International Aluminum Industry Exhibition was held in Shanghai New International Expo Center. SMM specially interviewed the bosses and bigwigs of various well-known enterprises.

At the meeting, SMM interviewed Mr. long Jiangtao, general manager of Ningbo Enaluminized New Energy Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Enaluminized Aluminum Company") and Ms. he Lizi, chief technical adviser. As an enterprise engaged in the research and development and production of metal air battery products under the Chinalco Group, on July 10, the China International Aluminum Industry Exhibition solemnly released three products: aluminum fuel communication backup power supply, portable aluminum fuel emergency power supply, hydropower and heat integrated aluminum fuel emergency support equipment. The three products respond to the strategic needs of national energy, meet the urgent needs of military and civilian emergency and standby areas, and lead the battery performance, causing a huge response in the metal air battery industry.

With the development of human society, the dependence on power energy is becoming stronger and stronger, and the demand for power supply and economy in human social activities is getting higher and higher. However, the existing fuel generator sets and all kinds of chemical power supply (such as lead-acid battery, lithium-ion battery, hydrogen fuel cell, etc.) are difficult to fully meet the diversified needs of power supply, such as safety, economy and long service life. Especially in the emergency power environmental pollution, major disasters hydropower and thermal emergency protection, power battery life is short, wartime power supply safety and strategic alternative energy and other military and civilian pain point problems, the traditional energy system is difficult to provide appropriate power solutions. The following is an exclusive interview with SMM:

Mr. SMM:, could you tell us something about your company and some of your main products?

Ningbo Enalco New Energy Co., Ltd. is an enterprise specialized in the research and production of aluminum fuel power supply under Chinalco Group. It was established in March 2019 by Chinalco Innovation and Development Investment Co., Ltd. At present, the company has developed and produced three series of products, first, emergency communication power supply series for communication base station and rail transit research and development; second, 1000 watt aluminum fuel portable emergency power supply series developed for special operations unit and emergency rescue unit; third, hydropower and thermal emergency and fuel assurance equipment series for emergency rescue, army camping, exploration and so on.

SMM: is familiar to the public, such as storage, hydrogen and lithium batteries, but it is a stranger to air metal batteries. Can you tell you what a metal air battery is and how it is different from other batteries?

Long Zong: metal fuel cell, in short, it is a kind of battery which uses metals such as aluminum and magnesium as fuel. Although it is a battery, more importantly, it is like a generator set. By replacing aluminum fuel, it can achieve continuous power generation. Compared with other electrons, it has the advantages of high specific energy, safety, environmental protection and so on.

At a time when SMM: is full of batteries in the market, why does your company make metal air batteries? What are the main performance, application areas and advantages of your company's launch of these three metal batteries?

Long Zong: Chinalco is interested in metal fuel cells with the advantages of high specific energy, good safety, good environmental protection, and continuous power supply in the field. Therefore, we are determined to set up Ningbo Enalu New Energy Co., Ltd., specializing in the research of aluminum power supply, mainly to solve the security problems of military mobile power supply and urban power supply; in the aspect of emergency power supply, we mainly want to solve the problem of continuity and reliability of emergency power supply. In the event of major natural disasters in the country, we want to solve the problem of hydropower and heat, which is a major concern of the country, as well as the problem of continuous power supply during long voyages in the field of power batteries. Chinalco wants to make use of its technological and industrial advantages in aluminum materials to promote the development of aluminum fuel power supply, strive to turn aluminum into a national strategic alternative energy, strategic reserve energy, and assume the due responsibility of central enterprises, and make their due contributions.

SMM: is such a cutting-edge technology, the company must have done a lot of scientific research investment and preparation, can you tell you about it?

Long General: although Ningbo Enalu New Energy Co., Ltd. was established less than half a year, but its previous research technology accumulation is very deep. Before the establishment of the company, we mainly relied on the team led by the Ningbo Materials Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to continuously conquer the core technologies related to aluminum fuel power supply, forming more than 40 patents and core technologies. In addition, in the aspect of aluminum electrode, we have solved the key problems day and night in the southeast branch of Academia Sinica of Chinalco Group, and adopted the unique multi-alloy microstructure control technology of Chinalco in aluminum electrolysis, so that the self-radiation of aluminum fuel has been greatly reduced and the utilization rate of combustion has been effectively improved. After the establishment of the company, and the combination of retired military communications power experts, the three sides work together. It is precisely based on such a profound accumulation in the early stage, so that we can launch the product in such a fast time, launch a good product.

Has SMM: started mass production at present, what is the planned capacity of the company, and when will it be able to reach production?

Mr. long: from the time of its establishment, in addition to speeding up the research and development of products, we are carrying out the construction of the production line plant, which is currently under construction. We expect the first phase of the capacity plan to produce 3,000 sets of five megawatts a year, which is expected to go into production in September this year and reach capacity in June 2020. At the same time, we have to carry out the second planning period planning, the second phase of the plan 10, 000 sets, production capacity of 30 watts.

What is the future plan of SMM: Company? would you like to introduce it to you?

Mr. long: we divide the company plan into three aspects. The first is the short-term plan, which is that we have to come up with four to six aluminum fuel power product lines in a year or two. This product needs to be able to really enter the market, open the market, to be able to be truly practical. The second is the medium-term plan, which takes us three to five years to come up with a series of solutions in several areas. First, in the field of military applications, I want to form military applications of mobile battlefield and urban combat power supply support system solutions and a series of equipment series. Second, for emergency support, we should form a systematic solution to the key hydropower and thermal support scheme and a series of hydropower and thermal integrated equipment. Third, in view of the field of emergency communication power supply, we plan to gradually have the emergency aluminum fuel communication power supply with the functions of storage battery and diesel generator set in three to five years, so as to form a systematic solution. Fourth, within three to five years, we will develop this series of aluminum fuel power supply. In terms of long-term planning, the company strives to upgrade aluminum fuel and aluminum energy to the height of the national strategic alternative energy strategic reserve energy within ten years, and strives tirelessly for this, which is also the original intention of China Travel Service Group to set up this company.

SMM: is a new industry like metal air battery. Do you think there are some urgent problems to be solved in this industry? can you tell me something about it?

Mr. long: I personally think that aluminum fuel cells will inevitably promote the vigorous development of the new energy industry together with lithium batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. In this respect, lithium battery is now in an irreplaceable position, hydrogen fuel cell is also developing rapidly. However, the aluminum fuel power supply should be said to be still in the initial stage, and its technical maturity and industrial matching still have a certain gap. I think there are three aspects of the industry that need to be addressed if aluminum fuel cells are to grow and develop step by step. The first is to provide really useful, easy-to-use good products, which is also an urgent problem to be solved for aluminum-air batteries. We must go out of the laboratory, we must avoid hype concept, we do aluminum empty batteries these physical enterprises must come up with a real practical, really meet the needs of users of the power supply, this is the industry attack on the first problem to be solved. The second problem is that in the current period, companies in the aluminum-air battery industry should unite to promote the development of the industry. Aluminum air power supply in the world is not many enterprises, in the domestic aluminum air battery is not many, but its application potential is very great. This requires that all the enterprises that make aluminum empty batteries must unite and work together. As the saying goes, peers are enemies, but in the field of aluminum empty batteries, I do not think they are enemies. We need to work together to promote the development of this aluminum-air battery industry. Third, the need for upstream and downstream supporting industrial chain to rapid development. At present, such as lithium batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, its upstream and downstream industrial chain is now quite complete. However, the development of aluminum air battery has just started, and there is still a considerable gap in its supporting industrial chain. In this respect, a large number of manufacturers need to enter the industry together, which is not what several aluminum-air battery manufacturers can do. Of course, I think that after the aluminum air battery becomes bigger and stronger, it is also a very big business opportunity. I think solving the above three problems is the problem we are facing at present when our industry is getting bigger and stronger. Of course, because the aluminum air battery has the advantages of high safety, high specific energy and environmental protection, it must have a broad space for development, I am very optimistic about this industry.
