SMM News: on July 10, Huawei's technology director, Nicolas Driesen, said Huawei had successfully tested 5G with all four major operators in Brazil and was helping them modernize their infrastructure before band auctions.
"since 2009, we have been working to develop 5G, and our end-to-end technology is cost-competitive because it can reuse some of the devices of previous generations," he said in an interview late last week.
Ericsson and Nokia are also vying for 5G, but Huawei's low costs and long-term relationships give it an advantage in most Latin American countries.
But even with Huawei leading the charge, Brazil still lags behind the rest of the region, according to Driesen.
Brazil's neighbor Uruguay became the first Latin American country to deploy a 5G business network in April. "Mexico is also a year or two ahead of Brazil," Driesen said, adding that Brazil could still catch up with other Latin American countries if the March 2020 auction goes ahead as planned.
But some industry observers are concerned that the auction could be delayed because the rules have yet to be finalized.
