SMM7, March 3: after 18 months of labor disputes with the company, 80 per cent of workers at the alinerie de Becancour smelter (ABI), owned by Alcoa, accepted the company's offer.
The smelter has an annual capacity of 413000 tons, but has now shrunk to 1/6 tons.
The company said that if a final agreement was reached, the ABI smelter could resume full production within 10 months.
The smelter will resume production on July 26 and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2020, the company statement said.
The labor dispute lasted 18 months.
The company had previously set a deadline of July 5 and said it would suspend the operation of the entire alinerie de Becancour smelter (ABI) if workers still did not sign a "final agreement".
