[SMM analysis] Why did the export volume of aluminum sheet and strip increase in May?

SMM6, 27 March: judging from the export data of the General Administration of Customs in May, the export volume of aluminum sheet and strip was 245000 tons, up 5.7 percent from the same period last year, and 9.7 percent higher than the previous month. Against the background that the market generally reflects the decline in export orders, the export data in May improved instead.

According to the survey of aluminum alloy sheet and strip export enterprises by SMM, most of the enterprises that account for more than 30 percent of exports are doing long orders, and export orders did not fall sharply in May and June, and at the end of 2018, after being subjected to the double anti-sanctions imposed by the United States on China's aluminum alloy sheet, export enterprises adjusted the structure of export countries, and the reduction in the United States was basically made up for.

For enterprises with unstable export customers, the current round of tariffs imposed by the United States on 200 billion goods does have a negative impact on export orders in May, but US customers say that goods arriving in Hong Kong before 1 July will not be affected by tariffs. Generally, the shipping time from China to the United States is 30 to 45 days. The month-on-month increase in export volume in May does not rule out that the month-on-month increase in export volume is caused by export grabs, and the export data for June and July may fall from the previous month.

Glencore, Mercuria in Talks with Venezuela on Potential Deal for Venalum Aluminum Smelter
[SMM Aluminum Express News] Glencore and Mercuria are separately in talks with the Venezuelan government over a potential deal involving state-owned Venalum, the country’s largest primary aluminum smelter. The discussions could involve operating the smelter and securing access to its aluminum output, although the exact structure remains unclear and no final agreement has been reached. Mercuria is reportedly pursuing the opportunity together with mining investment firm Heeney Capital. Venalum, located in Bolívar state, has nameplate capacity of around 430,000 tonnes of primary aluminum per year but has operated well below capacity after years of underinvestment and electricity shortages. A deal could therefore support rehabilitation and higher Venezuelan aluminum production, although the scale and timing of any restart or production increase have not been disclosed.
