Alcoa: if workers do not sign the agreement, the operation of the Quebec smelter will be suspended completely

After 18 months of labor negotiations, (Alcoa Corp) set a deadline of July 5 and said it would suspend the operation of the entire alinerie de Becancour smelter (ABI) if workers still did not sign a "final agreement". According to Bloomberg Intelligence, the smelter has an annual capacity of 413000 tons, but has now shrunk to 1/6 tons.

Alcoa also said that if a final agreement was reached, the ABI smelter could resume full production within 10 months.

This year, Alcoa faces a number of labour challenges.

In May, nearly 500 members of (United Steelworkers union) 's local branch in Massena, New York, said they agreed to strike after negotiations with Alcoa (Alcoa) and Arconic over new labor contracts broke down in mid-May.
