Rio Tinto introduces new aluminum alloy materials to reduce wheel weight and improve strength

Rio yesterday unveiled a new aluminium alloy that would reduce the weight of the wheels by 7 per cent and increase the strength of the wheels by 15 to 20 per cent. It can also be used to manufacture parts such as vehicle chassis. Rio Tinto says the new product is part of its high-strength 3xx family of alloys and will bring big changes to the industry.

Tolga Egrilmezer, Rio's vice president of sales and marketing, said the new aluminum alloy could increase the strength of the wheels while reducing the weight of the wheels, thereby improving the safety of vehicles and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which are strong selling points for consumers.
