SMM News: Glencore's Zambia Mopani Copper Mine Company (MCM) said on Monday that the Mufulira smelter has been shut down for upgrading.
The shutdown is expected to continue until the end of the year, the company said in a statement. But investment in the new shaft will not be affected.
Mopani has not yet been able to confirm the impact of the shutdown on production. The project produced 119000 tons of finished copper in 2018.
The company said it had reported the shutdown plan to the Zambian government. "reasonable arrangements will be made for employees affected by the shutdown, or paid leave will be provided."
