Imports from Indonesia rose 41,025 mt from Mar, accounting for 84.9% of the growth in total imports

SHANGHAI, May 29 (SMM) – China's ferronickel imports in April jumped 49.7% on the month to stand at 145,531 mt, after fewer arrivals from Indonesia drag on imports to 97,216 mt in March, showed data from China Customs on Wednesday May 29.

Ferronickel imported from Indonesia posted 95,457 mt in April, up 41,025 mt from March, accounting for 84.9% of the growth in total imports last month.

Compared with February, imports in April expanded a moderate 2.6%, with materials from Indonesia dipping 2.1%.

Spillover impact of China’s anti-dumping investigation on stainless steel from Indonesia and limited import profits caused the steep decline in ferronickel imports from the South-east Asian country in March.

Costs of High-Grade NPI in China Drop as Philippine Ore Arrivals Increase, Profitability Gap Widens
[SMM Nickel Flash] This week, the cost trends of high-grade NPI in and outside China diverged once again, with the profitability gap continuing to widen. The cash cost of high-grade NPI in China extended its downward trend, primarily driven by increased arrivals of Philippine nickel ore and persistently weakening prices, directly reducing smelting’s core raw material costs, while overall production costs pulled back in tandem.
