SMM News: according to a recent report by the China Natural Resources News, it was learned at the on-site exchange meeting of manganese ore prospecting results in Hunan, Guizhou and Chongqing held in Jishou City, Hunan Province from April 23 to 24. Since the implementation of the strategic action of prospecting breakthrough, The new reserves of manganese mines nationwide exceeded 1.1 billion tons, meeting 76 per cent of the overall target.

It is understood that since the start of the prospecting breakthrough strategy in 2011, overall progress has been good, a number of new mineral reserves, including manganese exploration has been strengthened. From 2011 to 2018, the national manganese mine exploration invested about 2.4 billion yuan, manganese mine drilling workload of about 1.28 million meters, made a major breakthrough in Guizhou and other places. According to preliminary statistics, by the end of 2018, the country's manganese mines had increased by more than 1.1 billion tons, of which the largest increase was in 2017, with 282 million tons of new exploration reserves.

Experts at the seminar pointed out that in recent years, the supply and demand situation of manganese ore resources in China has been grim, and the import volume of manganese ore has been increasing, with 6.64 million tons in 2007, 21 million tons in 2017, and 27.63 million tons in 2018, with a degree of external dependence of more than 60 percent. It is necessary for natural resources management departments and geologists to give full play to the basic role of resource security. China has great potential for manganese ore resources. It is necessary to strengthen scientific and technological innovation, comprehensive overall planning, basic work and comprehensive research, so as to do more work for the guarantee of manganese ore resources. In order to ensure the completion of the goal of manganese ore exploration, the Geological Exploration and Management Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources requested at the seminar that the next step should be to promote the work of manganese ore exploration. First, it is necessary to speed up the evaluation and filing of existing manganese ore exploration results. To prepare for the overall evaluation of the strategic action of prospecting breakthrough; Second, it is necessary to speed up the drive of innovation and give full play to the supporting role of science and technology; third, it is necessary to innovate the exploration mechanism and plan a new round of manganese ore exploration.

According to SMM, Asia is the main production area of low-grade manganese ore in the world, and its output mainly comes from China and India. From the point of view of demand, China's low-grade manganese ore is mainly used for the production of electrolytic manganese and electrolytic manganese dioxide products. Low-grade manganese ore in India is mainly used in local manganese alloy production.

At present, in the electrolytic manganese market, the latest mainstream trading center of spot in Guangxi and the manganese triangle region is around 13200 yuan / ton, and the manufacturers have not yet had an obvious intention to ship at a low price. The buyer asked about trying to lower the price, and the game atmosphere was strong in the field. The center of gravity of trading has a negative downward trend, but the range is not obvious. The industry is mainly concerned about the latest domestic steel mills, the export market due to the recent sharp fluctuations in the exchange rate is temporarily difficult to serve as a reference for the market.

SMM believes that at present, in terms of the production process and cost control of domestic manganese alloys, domestic manganese ores have been completely eliminated, and almost all imported manganese oxide ores and a small amount of imported manganese carbonate ores have been used. According to the annual report data released by South32, the unit operating cost of manganese mine in Australia is about US $1.57 / tonnage. According to the current sea freight (rising), the cost of CIF in China is about US $3.50 / tonnage. According to the annual report released by OMH, the cost of CIF China in its Australian mine in September 2018 is about US $2.70 / tonnage. The content of manganese in high-grade blocks is more than 44%, the content of iron is less than 5%, and the content of phosphorus is less than 0.01%. The water content is about 1.1%, compared with the price of the highest grade domestic manganese oxide ore in China, and concentrated in Yunnan, while the main producing area of manganese alloy is located in the north of China, and the transportation cost is higher. Although the transportation of domestic manganese carbonate in central China is more convenient and the price is low, the price is about 700 to 800 yuan / ton, but the indexes of various elements in alloy production are strict. The manganese content of manganese carbonate ore in China is on the low side, and there are many impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur. It is difficult to increase the difficulty of alloy production and product quality, so according to the current market demand and cost reasons, the domestic manganese ore market is still in electrolytic manganese and electrolytic manganese dioxide and other products, it is very difficult for domestic manganese ore to re-enter the manganese alloy market.
