SMM News: it is reported that the Jiugang Technology Center has innovated and developed a method for phase analysis of X-ray crystal diffraction, which provides a new idea for the determination of martensite and deformed martensite content in austenitic stainless steel: through the selection of sample groups and reference standards, By using the method of X-ray crystal diffraction, the quantitative analysis of steel grade by "characterization" is changed to the analysis of microstructure by X-ray passing through the surface of steel.
This detection method can deeply excavate the "true face" of the internal crystal structure of the steel, and provide a better reference basis for optimizing the smelting and rolling of the steel. New progress has been made in the measurement, analysis and research of the microstructure of martensite and deformed martensite in austenitic stainless steel.
To provide a basis for reducing smelting and rolling costs for Hongxing stainless Steel Branch of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., Pan Hongtao, a responsible engineer of surface analysis in the laboratory of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Technology Center, comprehensively combed the traditional testing methods: metallographic microobservation method, microscopic Vickers hardness method and ferrite magnetic method.
"in the past, the above three methods can be used to detect the microstructure of steel more accurately, but restricted by the characteristics of austenitic stainless steel, these methods still have many shortcomings in the detection of austenitic stainless steel." Pan Hongtao realized that the above method is not suitable to characterize martensite by the microstructure and properties of martensitic transformation products.
By consulting the data and comparing them repeatedly, Pan Hongtao found that the diffraction effect of X-ray in crystal material can be used to analyze the structure of austenitic stainless steel, and the analysis of martensite content by X-ray crystal diffraction accords with the characteristics of phase transformation.
Through hard work, X-ray has successfully solved the problems of tensile deformation of austenitic stainless steel, the content of martensite, deformed martensite and the increment of unit deformed martensite in the process of rolling deformation. Based on this principle, the phase analysis method of X-ray crystal diffraction is also called strain strengthening technique.
Strain strengthening is one of the economic strengthening techniques of austenitic stainless steel, which has the characteristics of originality, advanced nature and strong maneuverability. Through the transformation of Austenite into martensite during sheet forming, strong work hardening occurs and the yield strength of the material is improved. When the strain strengthened plate is used in the design of engineering steel, the thickness can usually be reduced by 30% to 50%, so as to reduce the manufacturing cost and transportation energy consumption, and the economic benefit is remarkable. Strain strengthening technology has been applied to the production of austenitic stainless steel in Jiuquan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.
In 2019, the advanced operation method formed by this study was named by the Group as the advanced operation method for the determination of martensite and deformed martensite content in Pan Hongtao austenitic stainless steel.
