SMM5, 17 March-Polish mining company KGHM, Europe's second largest copper producer, produced a record 142000 tons of copper in the first quarter of this year, up 28 per cent from the same period last year, according to the Mining website. This is partly due to an increase in production at the company's Sierra Gorda copper mine in Chile.
Sierra Gorda's copper production is also expected to exceed its original plan this year.
The Sierra Gorda copper mine is 55 per cent owned by KGHM and 45 per cent by (Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd), a Japanese Sumitomo metal mining company.
But at the same time, the company has also been criticized for investing huge amounts of money. The amount of investment has now reached US $5.2 billion and is still increasing.
