Retail sales of consumer goods grew by 7.2% in April, the slowest pace since May 2003

In April 2019, retail sales of consumer goods totaled 3.0586 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.2 per cent in nominal terms over the same period last year (a real increase of 5.1 per cent after deducting price factors, all of which are nominal except as specified below). Of this total, retail sales of consumer goods above the quota totaled 1.112 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.0 percent.

From January to April 2019, retail sales of consumer goods totaled 12.8376 trillion yuan, an increase of 8.0 per cent over the same period last year. Of this total, retail sales of consumer goods above the quota totaled 4.6212 trillion yuan, an increase of 3.5 percent.

In April, retail sales of consumer goods in cities and towns totaled 2.6259 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.1 percent over the same period last year, while retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas totaled 432.7 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8 percent. From January to April, retail sales of consumer goods in cities and towns totaled 10.9661 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.9 percent over the same period last year, while retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas totaled 1.8715 trillion yuan, an increase of 8.9 percent.

According to the type of consumption, in April, catering income was 328.1 billion yuan, an increase of 8.5 percent over the same period last year, and retail sales totaled 2.7305 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.0 percent. From January to April, catering revenue was 1.3925 trillion yuan, an increase of 9.3 percent over the same period last year, and retail sales totaled 11.4451 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.9 percent.

From January to April 2019, online retail sales nationwide totaled 3.0439 trillion yuan, an increase of 17.8 percent over the same period last year. Of these, online retail sales of physical goods totaled 2.3933 trillion yuan, an increase of 22.2 percent, accounting for 18.6 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods. Among the online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing and use increased by 26.7%, 23.7% and 21.2%, respectively.
