Anton Berlin, an analyst at Nornickel, the world's largest palladium producer, said it was difficult for palladium to replace platinum in the car's pollution control devices because of technical challenges and a lack of willingness on the part of businesses. At present, because carmakers are working to meet increasingly tight emission requirements, they must ensure that the performance of the three-way catalytic converter installed in the car exhaust system to purify exhaust gas will not be changed rashly.

SMM5, June 9: Anton Berlin, an analyst at Nornickel, the world's largest palladium producer, said palladium is difficult to replace platinum in the car's pollution control devices because of technical challenges and a lack of willingness on the part of businesses, Bloomberg reported.

At present, because carmakers are working to meet increasingly tight emission requirements, they must ensure that the performance of the three-way catalytic converter installed in the car exhaust system to purify exhaust gas will not be changed rashly.

But Nornickel expects a shortage of palladium this year, with a shortfall of about 500000 tons, though less than previously expected.

ANZ has also said that despite the recent contraction in car sales, palladium consumption in the automotive sector in Europe and China is expected to grow by 1.1 per cent to 8.8 million ounces in 2019.
