Tshipi achieved sales milestone, manganese sales reached 3.5 million tons

SMM4, March 3: Tshipi e Ntle Manganese Mining, a private battery metal manufacturer, has achieved its sales target of 3.51 million tons, a new record for the company.

The company had total sales revenue of A $872.3 million and a net profit of A $379 million in fiscal 2019 and paid shareholders a dividend of 3.21 billion rand.

The company also exceeded its expected transportation target.

The company reported higher rail and road traffic in February, exceeding its target for fiscal 2019.

Although Tshipi did meet its shipping targets and achieved its sales milestones, production at the Borwa mine fell slightly from a year earlier.

Production reached 915011 tons in the first quarter of last year, compared with 803927 tons in the fourth quarter of last year.

Manganese has long been used as an alloy in the manufacture of stainless steel. The fragile metal is also widely used as an oxide in the battery industry. In the past decade, the development of the battery industry has contributed to the increase in demand for manganese.

South Africa, where the Borwa mine is located, is the largest producer of manganese, with an annual output of 5.3 million tons, largely controlling the industry. By contrast, China, the world's second-largest manganese producer, produced less than half of South Africa's total manganese production of 2.5 million tons in 2018.
