Indonesian producers urge the government to reserve tin

SMM2, 20 Feb. according to Bloomberg, tin producers in Indonesia, the world's largest tin exporter, want the government to build national reserves so that the industry can manage supply and prices more effectively, thereby increasing the possibility of intervention.

China, Southeast Asia's largest economy, has repeatedly tried in recent years to boost the prices of metals used in electronics and cans by restricting production and sales, and to force exporters to trade commodities on local exchanges before shipping. Exports must also be inspected by inspectors designated by the Government to inspect the quality and origin of the ore used.

The association's plan comes as tin prices are rising and global tin supplies are expected to be in short supply. It was also developed before the presidential election, in which resource nationalism is expected to be a campaign issue.

Jabin said the trade minister would consider the proposal and that there were still many areas to discuss. Indonesia's national tin shipments are expected to fall 6.2 per cent to 72000 tons in 2019 compared with the same period a year earlier, as barriers to cargo verification and stricter inspections of ore supplies dampen sales and output. Tin prices are expected to remain near the current level of about $21000 a tonne this year.

There are 34 tin exporters in Indonesia, located in Banggabelidong Province and the Liao Islands.
