SMM2, 13 March: Indonesia plans to impose a 22 per cent protective tariff on imported aluminium foil due to a surge in aluminium imports from China due to a glut of aluminium foil exports from China, Indonesia said in a document submitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) last week.

On 11 October 2018, Indonesia informed the safeguards Committee of the World Trade Organization that it had launched a safeguards investigation into aluminum foil on 9 October 2018. "View detail

Indonesia told the WTO that the Indonesian National Security Council had recommended tariffs on aluminum foil because measures taken by Turkey, the European Union and India had led to the diversion of Chinese exports of aluminum foil to Indonesia.

China's aluminum foil production has been increasing over the past three years, but the domestic market has not digested all the extra production.

The global aluminium market was also affected by the 10 per cent tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump in March last year, but Indonesia's statement to the WTO did not mention the impact of US tariffs.
