December 29: U.S. Congressman Jackie Walorski (R-IN) leads a bipartisan group of colleagues to urge an end to steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the federal government on Canada and Mexico because they violate recent trade agreements with countries. These countries have taken retaliatory measures against the United States.

Specifically, members asked the Lighthizer to reach a negotiated solution to the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the United States Government on Mexico and Canada this year under section 232 of the 1962 Trade expansion Act.

They pointed out that the government's previous tariffs on Canada and Mexico were "a success in negotiations to renew NAFTA" throughout 2018.

Us President Donald Trump has used Article 232 to impose tariffs on foreign steel and aluminium after a US Commerce Department investigation showed that metals pose a threat to US national security because they reduce the US industrial base. Trump also used Section 232 to prove that investigations into whether imports of uranium and cars pose a threat to national security and should be restricted.

Despite Trump's recent signing of the US-Mexico-Canada agreement, (USMCA), "tariffs-and revenge from Mexico and Canada-still exist," lawmakers said. Members of the House of Representatives told the Office of the United States Trade Representative that they looked forward to more discussion of the situation, "because we will continue to review all aspects of USMCA."
