SMM12, 25 June: Novelis said that its business is not affected by the import tariffs of the United States. The company operates a large factory in Scriba, where 1/3 of its aluminum comes from Canada and another 2/3 comes from recycled waste. "tariffs will not have a significant impact on business in the short term. Unfortunately, higher tariffs mean higher prices for our customers and end consumers, "said Stephen Fischer, chief executive. "Novelis is meeting the strong demand for high-strength light aluminum from customers in cars, beverage cans and professional markets. As a result, our team in Oswego has recently achieved a number of production records while maintaining safe and efficient operations. In order to offset the limited impact of import tariffs on metals entering the United States across the border, Novelis has submitted a product exclusion application to the Ministry of Commerce.

"We have just completed a $10 million upgrade of the recycling facility," said Kevin Shutt, the factory manager.

Despite tariffs, Shutt said the plant recently reached record production in October and invested $13.5 million in new exhaust systems.

"demand for cars is very strong," Shutt said. At present, we are in a good position, our sales volume exceeds our production capacity, so every pound of products we can produce can be sold.
