New Century Resources, one of the world's largest zinc producers, successfully unloaded the first batch of 11000 tons of zinc concentrate shipped to China from the Queensland port of Karumba in early November after the resumption of the Century Zinc Mine in September. 10 per cent more than the expected 10000 tons. Patrick Volta, managing director of New Century Resources, said it was a milestone for the company and represented an incredible achievement for the entire New Century team.
The first stage of the zinc mine in the century is scheduled to reach 8 million tons per year by the end of the first quarter of 2019, and the second stage will reach 15 million tons per year by the end of 2019. The concentrate was transported to the port of Karumba through a 304km pipeline developed by the company.
Earlier this month, the company experienced some downtime delays; the first was due to the injury of an employee of contractor Paragon Tailings, and the second was due to bad weather that increased the average annual rainfall in the region by 11 per cent over a 24-hour period.
