SMM11, May 5-Zambian state power company Zesco said Friday that power supplies to large copper mine producers in Africa have been cut due to technical failures. "We encountered system interference that caused the copper belt to lose power, including mines," said Henry Kapata, a spokesman for the power company. We are investigating the cause of the interference. At present, power recovery has begun, but it will be gradual. A spokesman for Luanshya Copper Mine, owned by (CNMC), a Chinese non-ferrous metals mining company, said it expected to cut production by about four hours. "although power recovery has begun, we must gradually start the equipment to avoid damage," said Sydney Chile, a spokesman for the Luanshya copper mine. Industry sources say, Vedanta Resources's Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) shut down all but smelters and Konkola Deep Mine during the blackout.
