SMM10, 29 March: president Trump's representative said at an event in Ontario on Friday that President Trump is considering whether to waive Canadian steel and aluminum tariffs, an issue that Canadian officials hope will be resolved as soon as possible.
MacNaughton, who attended the forum, said he hoped the matter would be resolved "as soon as possible" because negotiations on a new North American self-imposed trade agreement were now over and there was no need to continue setting the tariffs.
The White House initially set tariff exemptions for Canada and Mexico, but lifted them in June to put pressure on them during the negotiations. They are required to sign the new North American self-financing Trade Agreement (North American Free Trade Agreement) as soon as possible.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, Trump admitted that the tariffs were mainly intended to force concessions from trading partners. "I negotiate with tariffs," he said, noting that the USMCA deal was evidence.
